New BMW M3 and M4 Will Have S55 Inline-6 Turbo with About 420 HP

The new M3 will be introduced in late 2013 as a concept, first as the F80 M3 sedan, and later as the F82 M4 coupe. This means that we're still a year away from the actual car rolling off the assembly line, with a production engine and gearbox.

We already know it's going to be a six-cylinder unit, but it's still not known what sort of displacement or output to expect. However, a member of Bimmerpost's F30 forum has managed to track down the VIN numbers for the car that had been registered in the UK.

According to these findings, the M4 Coupe will be powered by an engine called the "S55". This is clearly an evolution of the N55 block, but with lots more power. The S55 displaces 3.0-liters, not 3.3-liters like some speculations suggested.

From this displacement, 310 kW of power have been squeezed out. That's 415.7 hp in America, 415.7 bhp in Britain and 421.5 PS (hp DIN) in Europe. No matter how you look at it, it's a bit more than the current V8.
