With the M2 in development and the industry showing a huge interest in what the Motorsport division will bring new to the table, it’s only natural to expect all sorts of renderings. The one we’re showing you today is a bit on the wild side.

That’s because it doesn’t take into account the recent developments over at BMW and the latest design language. Furthermore, it goes a little off the chart with the intakes and slits.

First of all, the headlights will surely look different. Those pictured here have LEDs for low and high beams but, most likely, we won’t be seeing that on the M2 for now. The corona rings are also drawn wrong, looking nothing like the 2 Series’ design.

The kidney grilles are also pretty big, probably being taken straight off the M5 and they do give the entire front fascia a rather weird look. Coupled with the reshaped front bumper and the overly complicated air intakes at the sides, it’s the perfect recipe for a styling disaster.

To top everything off, the bonnet has two slits on the sides of the power dome while the mirrors seem to be taken directly off the M3/M4 duo. The cherry on top is the CFRP roof which will surely not happen.

What we DO know

So we might not know what the M2 will look like but we do have a pretty good idea of what it’s going to have from a technical point of view. Under the bonnet will hide a revamped version of the N55 plant dubbed N55B30T0 that is supposed to make around 365 HP and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque.

The transmission will be left to a manual 6-speed box most likely with the 7-speed DCT being kept on the side for now. It’s a similar situation as to the 1M Coupe, the predecessor of the M2.

Lightweight materials will be used but not as extensively as on the M4 in order to keep the two from cannibalizing each other. The same is the case for the sprint times that will be around 0.5 seconds apart (4.6 - 4.8 seconds for the M2).

The rear axle will feature a special limited-slip differential as expected and other M-specific technology. According to our sources, the M2 will enter production in November 2015 so expect a launch at Frankfurt next year at the latest.
