With BMW being almost ready to introduce the new 3 Series, the German automotive producer has also started testing other models that will be built on the platform of the 2019 3er. And one of the most sophisticated proposals comes from the new 4 Series Convertible.
We've already shown you a set of spyshots of the open-top 4er earlier this month, with a prototype now showing up in German traffic.

The test vehicle is heavily camouflaged at this point and yet there are two elements that easily stand out. First of all, the newcomer, which wears the G22 codename (the 4er Coupe will be the G23), has given up on its metallic soft top, going for a textile roof instead.

Such a switch obviously reminds us of the just-debuted 2019 BMW Z4 and this isn't the only move the second-generation 4 Series Convertible steals from the said roadster. That's because the kidney grille design of the prototype we have here also seems to be inspired from that of the second-generation Z4.

Compared to the three-piece metal roof of the outgoing model, the soft top saves weight, while also being more elegant, which is why this is the dominant solution on the market.

Underneath the body of the open-air model, we'll find the CLAR modular architecture of the German carmaker, which has already proved itself on the market.

The engine compartment of the newcomer will rely on turbocharged engines alone. The range is expected to kick off with a three-cylinder 1.5-liter and go all the way to the twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six of the next M4.

The Bavarian automotive producer is set to introduce the G20 3 Series Sedan at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, with the newcomer set to lose up to 100 kilos, despite an expected size boost. And the second-generation 4 Series Coupe and Cabriolet are expected to land one year later.
