New BMW 1-Series Gets Five-Star Euro NCAP Rating

A full batch of test results have been released today, October 26th, 2011, and one of the most significant models to be tested was the new generation of BMW 1-Series in its 116i 5-door configuration.
When it came to protecting its adult occupants, the new 1-Series performed well, with the only major problem noted being that the more sever side impact pole crash test revealed that protection for the chest was weak.

Based on dummy readings in the frontal and side impacts, the 1 Series scored maximum points for protection of the 3 year infant, but 18 month old protection was also very good.

“A switch is available as an option which allows the passenger airbag to be disabled, allowing a rearward facing restraint to be used in that seating position. Information provided to the driver about the status of the airbag does not meet Euro NCAP's requirements. The dangers of using a rearward facing seat in that position without disabling the airbag are clearly explained in a permanently-attached label,” Euro NCAP says.

The 1-Series is a very good looking hatch, especially round the front, but pedestrians will pay a price for this, as protection in all areas that would be struck by the pelvis was marginal and the car got no points for this.

BMW is know for its driving dynamics and it comes as no surprise that the new 1-Series was at the top of its game scoring 86% for its safety assistance devices. Euro NCAP like the car’s ESP and the fast that it had the annoying beep to remind you that you haven’t put your seatbelt on, even for the guys sitting in the back.
