It’s no longer a secret Android Auto will soon receive wallpaper support, so theoretically, users will be allowed to choose a new background for the home screen whenever they fire up the application.
As we’ve said before, Google won’t allow them to use any photo they want, but only choose from a pre-loaded pack of wallpapers bundled with Android Auto. And thanks to teardowns that discovered the wallpapers included in updates released in late 2020, we already know Google plans to offer eight different abstract images to be used as Android Auto background.
And yet, a new report reveals that Google has silently made a change in this regard with the release of Android Auto 6.0.
The company has pulled the previous pack of wallpapers and added a new one that’s more related to cars, and version 6.0 once again includes them, suggesting the release of this feature is closer than we think.
This time, there are 12 different wallpapers users would be allowed to enable as Android Auto wallpapers, and they are called Cordoba, Forest, Grille, Pleats, Waves, Amp, Ether, Fiber, Rotor, Stitches, Trail, and Wind. You can find all of them in the gallery here.
The car-themed wallpapers obviously make more sense on Android Auto, but of course, don’t be too surprised if Google makes even more changes to this feature before it goes live for everybody.
As for when exactly this is supposed to happen, you’d better not hold your breath for it. It’s pretty clear Google takes everything one at a time, and the company wants the new feature to be as polished as possible, so while we do know the release would happen this year, it’s still a mystery what version is supposed to include the wallpaper support.
In the meantime, you can download Android Auto 6.0, which itself comes with additional bug fixes and improvements, and there’s a chance it also resolves some of the problems users previously experienced with the app in their cars.
