New Australia Rally Has Great Success

After being away from the competition for the last two years, Rally Australia returs to the WRC calendar, but this time some 4,000 km away, in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales (NSW).

The event used to take place in the Perth area on the west side of Australia and now it has been moved to the far east, running from Tweed to Kyogle Shires. So far both drivers and teams have declared themselves happy with the organizaton.

After the first day of recce Citroen Junior Team driver Conrad Rautenbach shared some of his opinions on the newly opened rally. "The roads are good. They're mostly quite fast and wide, which is great," declared Rautenbach.

"They're quite similar to New Zealand on some of the farm roads in Waikato - and as fast as Finland but without the crests. It's been a good day, some of the stages run through some park land, so we've seen a kangaroo and a koala bear already. This is definitely Australia!" said the Citroen driver.

"There are a few changes in the road surface and a few changes in character of the stages from what we've seen today," continued Rautenbach. "It's not going to be easy to get the car set-up right straight away. We'll have to work on that."

The teams will work hard to find the right car set-up, as they weren't allowed to test in Australia and have sent people to inspect the track before making they're official arrival. The recce began in a 30 degree-celsius weather with plenty of sunshine, an outlook to be seen on race day as well.
