After announcing the pricing for Germany (€21,150 including VAT), Audi is now prepared to roll out the right-hand-drive A1 for the United Kingdom. Pricing in this part of the world starts at £18,540, and the number of trim levels totals six for the time being.
Even though the A1 is similar to the Polo (£15,595) in both platform and size, Audi knows how to make the subcompact hatchback feel a lot more special than the Volkswagen. 18,540 pounds sterling get you the 30 TFSI with the six-speed manual transmission in SE specification, which includes LED headlights and taillights, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Digital Audio Broadcasting, MMI radio plus with touchscreen infotainment, and virtual cockpit.
On the safety front, the highlights are Lane Departure Warning, speed limiter, and Audi Pre Sense Front. Optional extras in this category include Park Assist, Adaptive Speed Assist, and a rearview camera designed to make parking as easy as possible.
Turning our attention back to the oily bits, 30 TFSI is Audi for 1.0-liter turbo with three cylinders and 116 PS (114 horsepower). The 200 Nm (148 pound-feet) of torque enable an acceleration to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds with the manual. Go for the seven-speed DCT, and you’re looking at 9.4 seconds. The speedometer’s needle stops at 203 km/h (126 mph) provided that you find a long stretch of road or a runway to push the A1 to the limit.
Sometime next year, the premium model will welcome the 25 TFSI (95 PS), 35 TFSI (150 PS from 1.5 liters and four cylinders), and 40 TFSI (200 PS from 2.0 liters of displacement and six-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter). Regardless of engine option, the A1 comes with a particulate filter to keep NOx emissions under control.
In addition to the standard range, two special editions will be added in the United Kingdom in the coming months. The S Line Contrast Edition and S Line Style Edition both feature 18-inch alloy wheels, smoked taillights, black-painted badging, and lots of visual pizzazz for the cabin.
