New Alfa Romeo Sedan (Tipo 952) Confirmed to Debut On June 24, Giulia Name Not In the Cards

After Fiat-Chrysler’s Sergio Marchionne suggested back in September that June 24th, 2015 will be the date a new Alfa Romeo sedan will be launched, the man further cemented his previous statement at the Detroit Auto Show. June 24 is also the day Alfa will celebrate 105 years since it was founded.

Chatting with automotive reporters present at this year’s NAIAS, old man Sergio told that the all-new model will be a sedan. More specifically, the Tipo 952 will replace the long-gone and achingly good-looking Alfa Romeo 159 compact executive sedan.

Tipo 952 is how Alfa Romeo refers to the project, not the actual nameplate of the upcoming model. A reporter from AutomotiveNews Europe asked Harald Wester, the global chieftain of Alfa, about the rumored Giulia moniker, but he didn’t say yay or nay: ”I’m not confirming...[both Giulia and Giulietta] are milestones in Alfa’s history which are worthwhile to be reconsidered.”

Bummer, boo and hiss!

Slated to rival the likes of the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Alfa Romeo Tipo 952 will be a make-or-break model for the Italian brand considering Alfa Romeo wants to hit the 400,000 global sales mark by 2018 thanks to a full-on model lineup overhaul.

What awaits us on June 24th? Alfisti have a few reasons to rejoice considering that prototypes of the Alfa Romeo Tipo 952 were wearing a slightly shortened Maserati Ghibli body shell and meaty quad exhausts. It’s not known whether the Ghibli’s twin-turbo V6 petrol and diesel lumps will arrive on the new Alfa, but one things is certain: the Tipo 952 will boast with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

According to an earlier report, Alfa Romeo is in the middle of developing a number of new engines: a 2.2-liter turbo diesel packing 135 to 200 ponies, a 2-liter turbo petrol with outputs ranging from 180 and 330 horsepower, as well as a 2.9-liter V6 with up to 480 horsepower. Are you excited or what?
