GMC says “zero limits looks like this” but the General Motors-owned truck brand is wishful thinking. Lest we forget, the 2022 Hummer EV isn’t the only pickup with 36 million miles of sky and stars above one’s head.
GMC uses “zero limits” once again to describe the all-electric truck as a whole, along with a rather curious choice of words in the guise of “a unique open-air experience.” Marketing is of utmost necessity in this day and age, but someone’s trying too hard to hype up the revival of the Hummer.
To roll out in the fall in 2021, the newcomer appears to feature three removable panels from the current and the preceding teaser clips. A quick look through the Hummer EV minisite reveals, in fact, “four roof panels.”
Care to guess what other truck features a similar removable-top design? Well, that would be the Wrangler-like Jeep Gladiator which features two panels in the front and a large panel at the rear. Jeep calls this the Freedom Top roof.
GMC appears to have developed a simpler design with two panels over the driver’s and passenger’s heads and two other panels above the rear seats. Don’t, however, think that it’s an easy affair taking these babies off.
The Wrangler and Gladiator both need two people to remove the rearmost part of the Freedom Top while the panels up front are pretty cumbersome to handle if you don’t grab them by the center and an edge with both hands. Oh, and don’t forget the Hummer is a full-size truck.
Initially planned to be revealed on May 20th, the GMC Hummer EV promises 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) in as little as three seconds flat. Read that again, then remind yourself how much does a Ford F-150 Lighting or a GMC Syclone need to hit that velocity. The bragging rights don’t end here, oh no!
“Up to 1,000 horsepower” (986 PS) implies that GMC has more than one powertrain option in the pipeline, and the same can be said about “up to 11,500 pound-feet of torque” (15,592 Nm). In other words, the highest specification available could be a four-motor powertrain.
