SUVs and pickup trucks may be the hottest buys in this day and age, but wagons have yet to be replaced by them. Ford, for example, plans to pull out the Mondeo in Europe and Fusion in the United States in favor of an all-road wagon that combines the higher ground clearance of a crossover with the utility of a longroof.
Hyundai, on the other hand, didn’t mention a thing about the Sonata Wagon. The mid-sized sedan is a fine car for the money, a value-oriented proposition with more standard equipment than the likes of the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord.

Digitally imagined by Nikita Ghuicko for Russian motoring publication Kolesa.ru, the Sonata Wagon would serve as a replacement for the i40 Tourer in the Old Continent. A better-looking proposition that its predecessor – and roomier as well – the rendering before your eyes has slim chances of turning real.

Let’s go through the South Korean automaker’s lineup in Europe for a second, shall we? As far as crossovers are concerned, customers are treated to the subcompact i20 Active and Kona, the compact Tucson and Nexo fuel-cell vehicle, and the mid-size Santa Fe with a cavernous trunk and seating for up to seven occupants.

The South Korean brand also offers the i30 Wagon in this part of the world but no mid-size sedan or wagon. Though the Sonata may be brought to the EU as a replacement for the i40 Sedan, we wouldn’t hold our breath for the longroof given the automaker’s current mix of passenger cars and crossover utility vehicles.

Moving over to Australia, the Sonata soldiers on as a sedan Down Under while both i40 models have been discontinued last year. On that note, have you seen any spy photos of the Sonata Wagon testing at the Nurburgring or anywhere else?

As mentioned beforehand, there’s no place for such a car is an SUV- and truck-driven automotive world. As such, the renderings before your eyes will remain as such while Hyundai continues to focus on more lucrative models such as the Santa Cruz unibody pickup and a body-on-frame pickup.
