One day before we were supposed to see it, the all-new 2017 BMW G30 5 Series surfaced on an enthusiast forum in a handful of low-res pictures. And gosh, does the seventh-gen 5 Series promise to one-up the F10 5er in every single way!
Coming courtesy of rs271, a “well-known member” and “top poster of the month” on GermanCarForum, the following photos appear to be the real deal. From the looks of it, the G30 5er is larger than the mid-size luxury sedan it replaces, especially when it comes down to the car’s wheelbase.
As far as the design is concerned, the headlights, the trademark kidney grilles, front bumper, and the reverse hockey stick-like trim on the sides are inspired by the G11 7 Series. It’s hard to tell if the taillights are OLED units such as those on the M4 GTS, but at the front, this particular 5er is adorned with laser headlights. Sorry, North America, it's likely that you won’t get those.
The black trim at the front and rear, shape of the exhaust tips, as well as the E46 M3-inspired wheels could be part of the M Sport package. What doesn’t work so well in terms of design, however, comes in the form of the elongated taillights. On the upside, they help with masking the bulkiness of the rear three-quarters. Features like semi-autonomous driving, remote control parking, and gesture control will headling the tech-savvy front.
The interior offers yet another glimpse of what the M Sport package has in store for the 5er. The gear lever of the ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission, HVAC controls, tack-on LCD screen of the iDrive infotainment system, as well as the half analog and half digital instrument cluster are other goodies the G30 5er inherited from big daddy G11 generation of the 7 Series.
Regarding the oily bits, the 540i lettering on the trunk lid suggests that this car is equipped with the most powerful six-cylinder gasoline engine the G30 5 Series is expected to offer. An older report suggests that the 540i will replace today’s 535i with an engine known as the B58. The B58 straight-six in top form develops 335 PS (330 hp) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) from 1,520 rpm.
After the sedan, the seventh-generation 5 Series will spawn a family-oriented Touring (G31), an executive GT (G32), and the F90 M5, the go-faster model being expected to get xDrive rear-biased AWD and a twin-turbo V8.
Update: It's finally here, ladies and gents! Cue the 2017 BMW G30 5 Series!
