After spending some quality time with the Mazda6 and Mazda3, we are pretty eager to see how the upcoming third-generation Mazda2 feels. To fuel our curiosity, we’ve decided to bring you a net set of spyshots until Mazda finishes the work on its supermini.
The Mazda2 prototype we see here is still covered in heavy camo, but we can be pretty certain that this will stay close to the lines of the Hazumi concept (the red goodie above) Mazda showed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. Once again, we’ll remind you we’ve filled it under “Angry Birds”.
Angry or not, the new Mazda2 is expected to ride on an all-new Skyactic platform, one it will share with a future CX-3 crossover. The list of benefits brought by this is headed by a larger interior space, an issue with the current model.
As for the engine range, this won’t necessarily be one of the car’s strong points. Considering Mazda’s Skyactive range of powerplants, the only ones that seem suitable are the naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter petrol (the base unit on the Mazda3) and an all-new 1.5-liter diesel.
The new Mazda2 should arrive as a 2015 model, since Mazda has recently opened a plat in Mexico, which is set to debut the vehicle’s production by the end of the current year.
