New 2015 Audi R8 to Only Be Slightly Lighter: Report

While the Lamborghini Gallardo went out of production yesterday, its sister model, the Audi R8 is still on the market. However, as the Gallardo is set to be replaced by the Cabrera next year, the Audi R8 will also switch generations in 2014. Well, it seems that while the new R8 will be lighter, as expected, the weight savings won’t be all that big.
Audi's Board Member for Technical Development, Ulrich Hackenberg, has recently told Motor Trend that the 2015 Audi R8 will shed about 100-130 lbs (50-60 kg). This will be possible through the use of carbon fiber for the floor panes and the center tunel.

Audi, which owns Lamborghini, obviously wants the two models not to share customers, hence the multiple differences that arouse despite the two sharing quite a lot of components. However, the aforementioned weight loss seems rather inefficient, at it wouldn’t even bring the next R8 to the level of the Gallardo.

Of course, Hackenberg promised that the 2015 R8 and the Lamborghini Cabrera will offer bespoke experiences behind the wheel.
