New 2012 Toyota FT-86 Leaked Photos Emerge

A couple of days ago, we brought you the first leaked images showing the brand new Toyota FT-86 sportscar that is scheduled to be officially revealed at this year’s Tokyo Auto Show. Those images depicted the JDM model in its Modellista configuration, and now we can show you a fresh batch of shots from a Japanese magazine.

Carscoop says they found these images on a Japanese forum, and we have to say the FT-86 looks much better in red. The new, more circular headlights that replaced the ones on the latest concept have stuck around, so at least we know what the production car will look like round the back.

As for the front end, the side scoops that also house the foglights look a little different to the Modellista.

Expect to see this shape arriving at a Toyota dealership near you next year. The only engine you can have is a 2.0-liter boxer that was developed by Subaru. It will be mated to either a six-speed manual of an optional automatic. The engine will benefit from Toyota’s D-4S technology, which uses both direct injection combined with port injection to bring the best balance of power and economy.

Rumor has it that the engineers tested the car in snowy conditions at high speed. The FT-86 promises to be a proper sportscar with great feel from the chassis and steering wheel. They reportedly brought the engine and gearbox as close to the ground as possible to ensure the balance is right.

According to the Japanese scans, the window profile of the FT-86 was designed to look like the old 2000 GT, but the rest of the car looks thoroughly modern. Round the back, that 90 degree boot reminds of the the Celica, and it looks like the car has LED stop lights as standard.
