Nelson Piquet Jr. To Make ARCA Debut in Daytona

The 24-year-old son of three-time Formula One World Champion Nelson Piquet will make his official ARCA Racing Series debut for Eddie Sharp Racing (ESR) on February 6, during the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona International Speedway. Piquet Jr. will be driving ESR's No. 6 Toyota.

"I'm very excited! I can't wait to reach 200mph side-by-side and rubbing paint!" Piquet said. "The plans for the season are coming together really well, and I am racing with two very strong teams.  I can't wait to get out on track!"

"We are excited to have Nelson driving for us in Daytona this year," said Eddie Sharp. "He will represent ESR well, and we believe he will gain some good learning miles in a stockcar, especially racing at Daytona."

ESR is the current ARCA champion, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Justin Lofton clinched the title last year. In 2009, ESR also managed to rank 5th, 7th and 11th in the season-ending standings with its four teams.

This weekend, Nelson Piquet Jr. will be seen in South Africa, where he will compete in the Free State 500 at the Phakisa Freeway near Welkom, marking the first race on an oval track in the country using NASCAR-type American stock cars.

“It's going to be a really great couple of weeks, I can't wait to start racing again. Both weekends will be very different but both will be a test of endurance and will be really competitive. The event is South Africa will give me some good experience of oval racing in a NASCAR-type car ahead of my programme this year in the USA. It would be great to start the year with a couple of wins!” said Piquet on his official site.
