NCE to Chop the Roofs Off 100 Tesla Model S Vehicles

Newport Convertible Engineering (NCE) is a tuning company specialized in scalping production cars. The Huntington Beach-based company has done some crazy stuff over the years, from your run-of-the-mill Dodge Challenger Convertible to really special projects like the two-door Range Rover Convertible or the ludicrous Porsche Panamera Convertible.

But now it stepped up its game considerably with the topless version of Tesla's Model S electric sports saloon. Although the tuning firm's been developing the convertible Model S for the best part of the last six months, NCE hit the jackpot recently, having received 100 orders for this conversion from a chinese investor.

Production will start in July 2014 in three different locations in the U.S., United Arab Emirates and Spain. As if 100 orders weren't good enough news, Newport Convertible Engineering (NCE) officially requested Tesla Motors in a joint effort to build another 5.000 Model S  convertibles in anticipation of a worldwide demand.

If you thought that NCE only hacks the roofs off its cars then puts big price tags on the finished products, think again. The conversion process implies significant changes to help rigidize the chassis in order to preserve original driving dynamics and ensure the safety of the passengers in case of an accident.

At the moment, Newport Convertible Enginerring offers two designs for the Tesla Model S Convertible: a soft tonneau cover version with a sticker price of $29,000 (without the donor car) and a hard tonneau cover version that goes for $49,000 (without the donor Model S).
