Navistar to Produce All-Electric Trucks

American commercial vehicles manufacturer Navistar announced today it has signed a partnership with British company Modec for the development, production and marketing of Class 2c-3 all-electric commercial trucks. The partnership is called Navistar-Modec EV Alliance and will be selling the trucks on markets in the Americas.

"The commercial market is ready for electric vehicle technology to advance,” Dee Kapur, Navistar Truck president said. “This vehicle is road ready for fleets to implement as a practical solution for many applications."

"It has an excellent, eye-catching design that says, ‘this is something different, the future is now.’ We see this as an ideal vehicle for the U.S. urban markets. We already have interested customers, including some of the most respected names in the industry.”

The eye-catching truck has an intended range of 100 miles per charge and is only to be used in heavy stop-and-go driving (read: urban environments). The trucks will be built in Elkhart County, indiana, with the target set at manufacturing some 400 units 2010 and several thousands within two years. Navistar says the new venture will employ in the end around 700 people.

We are very pleased to partner with Navistar in this new venture,” Bill Gillespie, Modec CEO added. “Navistar’s commercial truck market leadership, coupled with their proven track record of clean vehicle technology, makes them the perfect partner.

Navistar became recently the first original equipment manufacturer to receive the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) SmartWay Program dual certification.
