Navistar Partners with Tatra for Canadian SMP

Defense contractor and Czech heavy-duty off-road trucks manufacturer Tatra announced today they have partnered for the development of a new Standard Military Pattern vehicle for Canada's Department of National Defence.

The SMP, which will replace the existing Medium Logistics truck fleet, will be built by Navistar as prime contractor, with the company's dealerships to provide parts and service support. Obviously, no details about the upcoming SMP have been released yet.

“We are excited to team with Tatra for the upcoming SMP vehicle program and believe that Tatra’s innovative vehicle designs and unique tactical chassis technology provide the team with a great advantage,” Archie Massicotte Navistar Defense president said in a statement.

“Combining our military vehicle expertise, the Navistar-Tatra team brings to the table the know-how and the flexibility to provide Canada with great tactical vehicle technology and support solutions.”

The Canadian government announced in January last year it will allocate CAD$275 million for 1300 new logistics vehicles (MILCOTS) from Navistar, along with training, delivery and parts.

At the time, Navistar was also announced as the winner of the contract for SMPs, estimated at over 1,500 units.

“We are truly energized by how well Tatra and Navistar have come together as a team over these last several months,” Ronald Adams, Tatra CEO added.

“As our cooperation has deepened with each passing day, and as we have built our first trucks together, we have come to realize how very powerful this team will be in the tactical vehicle arena. Our combined technology, engineering, manufacturing, and support capabilities present a compelling value proposition for our customers.”
