“For businesses, municipalities and other organizations that demonstrate their environmental commitment, the eStar provides them with a smart option,” Shane Terblanche, general manager, electric vehicles at Navistar said in a statement.
“We have brought the eStar to market to meet the needs of responsible customers who strive to have a positive impact on the environment through energy efficiency.”
The eStar truck, the first medium-duty commercial vehicle to receive EPA and CARB certification as a zero emission vehicles, was purpose-built for electric power. It can be plugged in and fully recharged within 6-8 hours, while the quick-change cassette-type battery can be replaced in 20 minutes. The truck has a work
payload of two tons.
“FedEx is continually looking to connect the world more responsibly,” Mitch Jackson, VP of Environmental Affairs and Sustainability at FedEx added. “Navistar’s purpose-built electric truck has the potential to assist in making our business more environmentally sustainable and reduce dependence on foreign oil, while ensuring FedEx the reliability necessary to meet our commitment for superior customer service.”
The truck will be sold through a wholly owned Navistar affiliate and, for now, will only be operating as part of the FedEx fleet.
