Two tickets to the C8 Corvette launch event are at stake, and the organizers don't even include transportation to the yet-undisclosed location in California. The day of unveiling is July 18th, and the highest bid at the time of writing is $6,100. The question is, what do those tickets include?
For starters, general access for two people. Overnight accommodations for July 18th and July 19th are also offered, along with a group lunch and a tour of an area of the National Corvette Museum on Friday morning. Bus transportation to and from both days of activities and a polo round off the list of goodies
The bidding started at $100, and the eBay auction will end on Thursday, June 27th. On the second day of the unveiling, participants will be given the chance to see the C8 Corvette up close, network, and “talk to key people on their team.”
Make no mistake about it; General Motors is milking the cash cow with the eighth generation of the Corvette. It’s been too long in the making, and given the precedent set by the ZR1, the expectations are high for the C8. Instead of a supercharged small-block V8, a twin-turbo V8 will be introduced sometime in 2020 for the 2021 model year.
A hybridized option will be introduced later on, but in the first year of production, the C8 will be offered with the LT2. This engine displaces 6.2 liters just like the LT1 in the C7 but develops closer to 500 horsepower instead of 460 horsepower. Speaking of the outgoing model, the C8 will be offered with optional extras such as the Z51 Performance Package.
A dual-clutch transmission comes standard, and even though the engine has been relocated to the middle, the Corvette remains rear-wheel drive. At around 8:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time, the event will begin at an undisclosed location in Tustin, California.
If you can’t afford to bid those tickets or don’t want to fly so far to see the C8 Corvette in the flesh, don’t worry because General Motors will stream the ceremony over the Internet.
