“I don't recall trying to blame anything on anyone,” said NASCAR's vice president for corporate communications Jim Hunter, as reported by series' official site.
“We tried letting the competitors police themselves when it comes to blocking and bump drafting. We might have to start making some judgment calls of our own and issue penalties for drivers who blatantly block and abuse the bump drafting. We're going to take whatever measures we need to in order to ensure the races are as safe as possible for everyone,” added Hunter
Neither Edwards, not race winner Keselowski were handed any penalties following the Talladega incident, but NASCAR did not deny further actions might be taken in the near future. However, the potential penalties are to be simply procedural, meaning it won't lead to docking of points in the overall classification.
Just as a reminder, when fighting for the lead in the final lap of the Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway, Edwards tried to block Keselowski on the inside and his car turned sideways. His Ford became airborne in the process and was immediately hit by 3rd placed Ryan Newman, projecting it into the catch fence.
While Edwards walked out of his car with no injuries whatsoever, 8 fans were injured as a result of the flying debris. The most affected on those eight was a women, who sustained facial injuries and is now in hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
