NADA Backs Toyota in Congressional Hearing

The upcoming Congressional hearing on the huge Toyota recall has prompted the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) to issue a statement in which it warns congress to base the hearing on facts and not on listening to all the "unsubstantiated rhetoric" on the subject.

"NADA recognizes the important oversight role of Congress. However, we urge the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, as it works responsibly to look into the facts surrounding the Toyota recall, not to give countenance to any unsubstantiated rhetoric which has the effect of unjustifiably alarming the public about the Toyota brand," NADA's chairman, John McEleney, said in a statement.

Earlier today, the congressional committee announced it is postponing the Toyota hearing to further investigate the matter. The hearing has been rescheduled for February 24, one day before the Energy and Commerce subcommittee takes reviews Toyota, Reuters reported.

The hearings and investigation will try and shed some light on the recall which reached a global level and just about all of Toyota's important models. The recall, however, is considered a natural consequence of a POSSIBLE fault and should be treated as such.

"Recalls are quite common in the auto industry and involve virtually every manufacturer at one time or another," McEleney added.

"We urge all government officials, whether in Congress or the Administration, to be careful what they say while the investigation goes forward. It's important not to rush to judgment. Ill-advised comments reverberate through the entire American buying public, impacting auto dealerships, their employees and our local and national economy."
