Despite being based on the same platform as other mid-size SUVs from the Volkswagen Group, such as the Volkswagen Touareg, Porsche Cayenne, or even the Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus, the Audi Q7 has always been slightly larger than its brothers.
Available with up to seven seats, thanks to a slightly longer length that puts it somewhere between a mid-size and a full-size SUV, the Q7 has been in a niche of its own.
Rumors about a truly full-size Audi SUV that is even larger than the Q7 have been circulating for quite a while now. Well, a mysterious prototype was recently spotted in northern Sweden, and it looks like those rumors have finally turned into reality.
Tentatively called the Audi Q9, the gargantuan SUV looks to be much larger than the Q7, whose second generation received a mid-cycle facelift not that long ago.
When it arrives on the market, it will go head-to-head with rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLS and the BMW X7, so you can expect a full seven-seat interior and a reasonably large luggage compartment, which the prototype seems to be able to accommodate.
While the rear seems to feature the production taillights, the front end makes do with testing lights. The latter may or may not preview a new design direction for Audi since they appear to be double-stacked.
The weirdest detail about the model is actually its camouflage pattern, which is usually only used by Audi models that are destined for China, like the A7 fastback that will transform into a sedan by next year.
That said, we doubt Audi would make a full-size SUV a China-only affair, with the U.S. market being a perfect fit for it for such a model as well.
Either way, the gargantuan SUV is expected to feature electrified twin-turbo V6s and V8s with mild-hybrid technology and should also be available in a plug-in hybrid version with at least 50 km (31 miles) of electric range.
