Tesla CEO Elon Musk published a blog post on the company’s website in which he responds to the negative media coverage the Model S has received as result of the three fires and explains how drivers “are more than four and a half times more likely to experience a fire in a gasoline car than a Model S”.
In addition, Musk outlined three “further actions” Tesla will take following the fires “in order to make clear the confidence we have in our product”. First, the Model S will get an over-the-air update to the air suspension for a greater ground clearance at highway speeds. Developed to reduce the chances of underbody damage, the feature will get a software update in January that will allow the driver to control the air suspension ride height.

Second, Musk says Tesla has requested that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducts a full investigation into the fire incidents. Third, the automaker plans to amend its warranty policy to cover damage due to a fire, “even if due to driver error”.

More details on Elon Musk’s statement are available in the blog post below.
