A number of Volkswagen car owners are now complaining that listening to music in their cars is pretty much impossible if they’re trying to do the whole thing using music players in Android Auto.
More specifically, the issue was first reported by a Volkswagen Multivan T6.1 owner, who explained that while the sound is working just as expected in apps like Google Maps, it doesn’t in Spotify and Google Music.
“AA connects normally. I can use Maps to navigate. I can control the navigation volume. But when I try to play Spotify Music or Google Music I hear nothing. I can see on my phone and car that music is playing but I can’t hear it or control the volume. Same problem with Google Music,” Android Auto user Max Mueller explains.
Several users have already confirmed a similar behavior in their cars, and by the looks of things, the issue is only happening on Volkswagen models. The phone brand doesn’t seem to make a difference, as this has been reported on Samsung, Google Pixel, and OnePlus devices.
Google is yet to acknowledge the problem, which means we’re still far away from the moment a workaround would get the go-ahead. But someone on the Google forums claims they have found a rather unexpected workaround.
“I disconnect AA via menu (not the cable!) I start the "Media" Mode in my car that plays music that you have stored on the phone via MP3 files. Than I turn up the volume and go back to AA and connect my phone again. NOW I can hear Spotify music in AA ! But (!) when I turn the volume down I can´t turn it up again,” they say.
For the time being, this appears to be pretty much the only way to fix the whole thing, so try it out and see if it restores music audio for you. But no matter if this works or not, a full fix from Google is still mandatory.
