KTM announces no less than 20 bike models will have to be brought in over at an authorized dealer for a mandatory check in the fork assembly. The Austrian manufacturer has no specified the number of recalled bikes, but as all of them belong to the 2015 model year family, we can expect that the whole lot must undergo the same procedures.
Secretive as almost always, KTM is not offering too much information on the problem all these bikes have, and only mentions what must be checked. According to official sources, the aim of the current recall is to “to check the correct assembling of the fork´s piston rod and screw cap and ensure maximum operational safety, function and quality of the front wheel.”

A problem on the WP assembly line?

This sounds like something might have gone a bit wrong on the assembly line of WP suspensions, as the press release mentions that a problem might occur in the bikes equipped with the WP 4CS fork. As KTM themselves describe the situation, the piston rod inside this fork model might have been assembled improperly, possibly leading to a fork malfunction. Thankfully, no accidents resulting from such a malfunction have been reported, we are told.

The checking must be performed by a KTM dealer

Mattighofen adds that the checking must be performed by an authorized dealer and the operation will be carried out involving no cost from the customer. The time needed to sort things out will not exceed 30 minutes, the same source mentions.

Customers who have already received affected bikes have already been notified, and KTM adds that they can anyway find out more by entering their bikes’ VIN number (17 digits) in the dedicate Service area on the KTM website.

Here is a list of the models affected by the recall. They are all 2015 model year machines:

Even though that KTM is one of the highly-revered names in the motorcycle industry and the best-selling bike in Europe (by the number of sold units), it looks like nobody is perfect.
