Since the marketing machine from Mercedes-Benz couldn't really hold their horses until the CLS facelift's reveal at the end of the month, earlier today they pretty much showed us the undisguised front of the model in all its glory.
Sure, the reasoning behind the image was not to actually show the refreshed model, but its innovative Active Multibeam LED headlights, which will have their premiere on the Mercedes-Benz CLS (C218) and its Shooting Brake (X218) variant facelift.
As both the first and the second generation of the CLS have premiered some type of headlight technology, it is no wonder that the upcoming mid-cycle refresh will also incorporate some kind of advancements in this area.
If some of you recall, the C219 generation had the first ever bi-xenon headlamps with active and cornering light, while the C218 came with the first ever dynamic all-LED headlamps with all the light functions from the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Light System.
The new Multibeam LED headlamps on the C218 and X218 facelift bring lighting technology to an all new level, despite the technology not being that much different than the Matrix LED system on the Audi A8 facelift.
Using the information coming from a camera positioned behind the windshield, no less than four control units change the pattern on the lights no less than 100 times per second.
Speaking of which, each new all-LED headlamp now features no less than 36 different LEDs, with 24 of them being individually-controlled in order to perfectly illuminate the road without blinding other drivers.
“The first LED headlamps with all the adaptive functions of the Intelligent Light System have been available to our customers since 2010 in the CLS”, said Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Daimler Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.
“With MULTIBEAM LED technology the headlamps now are able to react even more quickly, more precisely and individually to changing traffic conditions. On top of this, there are expanded functions of which a driver will become directly aware, such as anticipatory camera-based curve recognition with the active light function. With such features Mercedes-Benz once again is demonstrating its role as an innovation leader in the automobile industry.” Dr Weber continued.
Apart from providing a faster-reacting dazzle-free lighting function, the new Multibeam LED headlamps also offer an anticipatory camera-based active light function and a navigation-based roundabout light function. Another interesting feature is most definitely found in the LED "eyebrows" of the headlights, which emit a blue hue when the the car is unlocked, just like on the all-new C-Class W205.
