While there were surely plenty of vintage Bugattis to ogle at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance over the weekend, it seemed that most of Bugatti’s attention went to promoting the rare collection of the six Bugatti Legends cars and the custom-made Bugatti Veyron 1of1. Well it turns out that the Mullin Automotive Museum had a one-off Bugatti of its own on hand to wow the crowds.
This 1931 Bugatti Type 50 S (chassis No. 50117) has been fully restored with a spectacular black and green paint job. During the course of the six-month restoration, it sounds like most of the attention was paid to the interior, which mirrors the Art Deco era with unique stingray leather upholstery with a sunburst finish that took “several hundred hours” to complete. Sadly, there are no additional shots of the car, but from this angle, the pastel-colored leather is a perfect accent to the sea foam green exterior paint.

Perhaps making this particular car even more notable is that it is a full numbers-matching car – right down to the supercharged inline eight-cylinder engine. From the car’s description, the engine is what made the Type 50 S so special for its day, and allowed it to be used as a racecar in the early 1930.

There are a great number of special cars in the Mullin Collection, but the Type 50 has always stood out to me as exceptional. Every aspect of this car exemplifies the brilliance and innovation of Jean Bugatti and Million-Guiet. It brings me great joy to preserve their magnificent work and share it with the public for generations to come,” said Peter Mullin, chairman of the Mullin Automotive Museum.

After Pebble Beach, this Bugatti is heading back to the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, CA, which exists to preserve French art and automobiles from the Art Deco era – this Bugatti definitely fits the bill in both regards. At the museum, it will be included in “The Art of Bugatti” exhibition that runs through the end of this year.
