Don’t get me wrong, the standard Mk 7 Golf GTI was one hell of a machine straight out of the box. I mean, there’s a reason why we refer to it as a ‘hot hatch’, right? Not only did it pack a healthy dose of juicy features and top-grade performance, it was also one of the prettiest machines in the hatchback segment.

It was put in motion by a fiendish 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four powerplant that feeds its force to the front wheels by means of six-speed manual transmission. At approximately 4,500 revs, this nasty piece of intercooled machinery was good for up to 210 hp, joined by a solid torque output of 258 pound-feet (350 Nm) between 1,500 and 4,400 rpm.

This whole ordeal blessed VW’s hatchback with a generous 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) acceleration time of around 6.5 seconds, while its top speed was rated at no less than 152 mph (245 kph). To be fair, that’s not too bad for a vehicle with a 2.0-liter engine and a dry weight of 3,020 lbs (1,370 kg).

At the front, the entire thing was supported by a strut suspension unit, coupled with a multi-link setup on the other end. Golf GTI crawled on a set of 18-inch aluminum wheels that wear disc brakes on all four sides. As to the rotors themselves, they had a diameter of 12.3 inches (312 mm) up front and 10.7 inches (272 mm) at the rear.

All things considered, this bad boy doesn’t necessarily need any sort of tuning kits or custom modules to shine. However, if you’ve got a Golf sitting around and consider that it could really do with some extra oomph, then the auto wizards over at Mountune are your guys.

The British firm deals with just about anything from regular servicing and merch distribution, to developing some seriously rad aftermarket components that’ll have your beloved whip discover its true potential. Their portfolio hosts an array of automotive brands, such as Audi, Skoda and, last but not least, Volkswagen.

To be fair, it’s quite safe to conclude these folks aren’t messing around, and their Stage 2+ package for VW’s hot hatch does a pretty neat job at demonstrating the crew’s sheer level of skillful craftmanship. In fact, let’s have a quick look at what they’ve managed to accomplish.

By fiddling with its inline-four mill and treating it to a Golf R’s vicious IS38 turbocharger, the Brits managed to squeeze out an additional 170 ponies and 118 pound-feet (160 Nm) of feral twisting force. As such, total output figures are catapulted all the way up to 380 hp and 376 lb-ft (510 Nm) of torque.

Furthermore, their customers may consider a selection of delicious optional features to match that extra muscle. These include a handsome high-performance turbo back exhaust system and a top-of-the-line clutch item, as well as a fresh intercooler and an induction kit for Golf GTI’s untamed four-cylinder beast, to name a few.

Personally, I would’ve hoped to see some more custom goodness in the visual department, but Mountune’s package will still do the trick of making VW's hatchback perform like a wonder!
