The Mulholland Highway is probably the most famous road in California, known for its difficulty and tricky tight corners. Naturally, it makes the number one destination for hundreds of bikers each weekend to ride there in search of thrills and skill honing.
But there’s a catch. The famous route sometimes attracts less experienced riders and drivers, some of them not knowing the very basic corner-taking practices such as braking before a turn and looking for the perfect line to hit the apex.

Misjudging your corner-entering speed while driving a car can be most of the time corrected even by beginners. But do that on a motorcycle and you might end up on the side of the road or crashing head to head with another motorcycle or car.

Like the rookie in the video bellow did, ruining the day for two brothers that were enjoying their ride on the Snake, the most known segment of the Mulholland highway. The crash happens so fast you really can’t say what he did wrong at first.

Thankfully, aritweets, the guy who captured the events on camera and also took the fall, made sure to slow down the video and allow for some critical analysis. First of all, the rookie was coming in too hot. There was another bike ahead of him and he was probably trying to catch up, twisting hard on the throttle before a hairpin.

He enters too fast, realizes that too late, sees the oncoming rider, tries to brake, locks up and his bike gets straight up and crash almost head-on with the unlucky fellow. Luckily he survived with a damaged left hand.

And this brings us to the moral of this story - if you want to go fast on your bike/car, get it on a track and do it safely. And second to this, if you’re going to hit this kind of twisties on your bike, don’t do it in your first year of riding. Also, do take some advanced riding techniques classes where they’ll show you the right way of taking a sharp corner and also tell you a thing or two about target fixation.
