Airbag clothing isn’t exactly new: clothing items with deployable airbags for motorcyclists or cyclists have been around for years. If you’re lucky, 2021 could be the year when you get one such thing to save your butt. Literally so.
Airbag Inside Sweden AB, which describes itself as an “innovative airbag & design company based in Gothenburg, Sweden,” is currently working on a pair of airbag pants (hat tip to New Atlas), given that the most injuries sustained in case of a bike crash are to the legs. They’re called the Airbag Jeans and, for the time being, only a prototype exists.
You can see it in action in the video at the bottom of the page. That’s Moses Shahrivar, the founder of the company, throwing himself on the floor to demonstrate the airbag’s efficiency in preventing leg injury. Shahrivar developed his first pair of MC jeans in partnership with Harley-Davidson back in 2005, so at the very least, you know he has some experience to throw behind this project.
Speaking of which, the Airbag Jeans are likely to become a reality once a certain number of emails are registered to the website. That’s when a KickStarter campaign will launch, offering customers an early chance to get a pair and the company some much-needed capital to take the product into mass production.
The Airbag Jeans will be sold under the Mo’Cycle brand, which already offers bomber jackets made of Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight-Polyethylene fibers, which are said to be “stronger than Steel.” As per the media outlet, the airbags in the pants will use a tether-deploy system – or at least the prototype does. The designers are working with researchers from the Uppsala University to develop a sensor-enabled system.
For the time being, these are the only details available on the Airbag Jeans, so we’ll just have to wait for even the slightest info on pricing and real-life tests. But we do have this: the prototype actually looks good, fashionable almost.
