MotoGP to Switch to 2-Day Events, Cancel Fridays

MotoGP promoter Dorna looks set to change the configuration of a racing weekend in the series starting 2010. After canceling all Friday practice sessions ahead of the 2009 season, Carmelo Ezpeleta – head of Dorna – revealed that he will be looking to axe all activities at the circuit on Fridays from 2010 onwards.

As announced by Ezpeleta, a final decision on the matter will be taken when the teams meet to discuss further means of cost reduction at Jerez, later this month. The meeting will coincide with the last group test before the official start of the 2009 season.

Further topics to be taken under consideration by the MotoGP teams next week will include prolonging the life of an engine to at least 3 races and the banning of spare bikes. As far as including an additional title for “Customer Teams” in the MotoGP, the Spaniard revealed the idea attracted criticism from some of the teams and will likely not make it to the discussion board.

“At Jerez, during the tests, we'll meet to decide the 2010 regulations. We'll surely cancel Fridays, which will be dedicated to promotional activity. There won't be spare bikes anymore, and we'll talk about the possibility of using the same engine for three races. he rule whereby rookies can't join a works team is also likely to be approved,” said Ezpeleta, talking to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, as reported by autosport.com.

“For a team like Gresini's, to be able to say 'we are privateers world champions' could have been something important to pitch to sponsors. But they told me it would look like a demotion to secondary league, so I accept this criticism. It won't get done,” added the Spanish official.
