It was only a matter of time until the Grand Prix Commission (GPC) would at least consider making some changes in the way MotoGP races are being run. On Thursday, the GPC meeting will discuss the proposal of splitting the responsibilities of Race Direction for a better race administration.
In fact, the new proposal concerns what the Race Direction proved unable to deal with in an unequivocal manner - incidents between drivers. A new panel is to be created and it is supposed to analyze incidents between riders and come up with solutions in due time.
The stewards that will form the new body will only deal with such events, and their work will be complementary to that of Race Direction. RD will still be in charge of all the aspects related to running the race, such as safety, marshaling, and more.
According to David Emmett, the stewards in the new panel are expected to have no relationships with Dorna, meaning that they will not be Dorna officials. The occasional presence of Dorna officials in the Race Direction does not bode well, especially after the Sepang incident.
The new body is expected to be much more efficient at understanding track incidents, and to do so without allegations of bias, even though its members will also be paid by Dorna, just like the Race Direction is.
How much the new panel will help settling such incidents between riders remains to be seen, but we can hope that reducing the Race Direction's burden and leaving it on other shoulders that are supposed to specialize in this will yield good results.
