MotoGP 2010 Calendar Announced

The International Motorcycle Federation (FIM) recently revealed the official calendar for the 2010 MotoGP championship. Unlike their counterparts in single-seater open-wheel racing, namely Formula One, all the rounds (some of which have different statuses throughout the season) showed by the championship officials for the 2010 season are final and undisputed.

As with the last season, the MotoGP action will be set off during the night event in Qatar, at the Losail International Circuit. Although there were several discussions over the possibility of having another night race in the series, Qatar has remained the only race to be disputed under artificial lights in 2010.

The Dutch Grand Prix will again get under way on Saturday, June 26, while the American GP at Laguna Seca will once again see only the MotoGP machineries fight for victory.

However, the biggest news of all is the return of the Silverstone circuit in the MotoGP calendar, after almost 30 years of absence. The Northamptonshire based track last hosted a premier motorcycle race back in 1980 and will this year replace Donington Park for the British Grand Prix event (following the Leicestershire based track switch of strategy towards F1).

Silverstone will host its MotoGP race on June 20, swapping places with Barcelona for the Catalonian round (which was moved to July 4).

In addition, the MotoGP calendar will finally get to travel to Hungary for the race at Balatonring. The circuit was initially scheduled to make the cut in 2009, but several problems regarding the development of the track kept the Hungarian fans out of the MotoGP action last season.

In all, the calendar has 18 rounds, while only 17 of them will be tackled by the Moto2 field.
