Back at EICMA 2015, I managed to shoot several photos of the MGX-21 Flying Fortress, now seemingly fresh out of the prototype stage and looking almost eager to hit the road.
When Moto Guzzi introduced the California 1400 machines, I thought this was a model that was still under the dominion of huge inertia, one of the attributes that go hand in hand with classic motorcycles. I am ever so glad to see Guzzi proving me wrong!
The California 1400 became a real cruiser platform, and we can already speak about an entire family derived from the base model. Guzzi’s design studio has worked around the clock to deliver a cruiser for almost any type of rider.
The MGX-21 Flying Fortress was present at EICMA last year, too, but as a mystery prototype, and few dared to make a call as to whether it was anything more than a show bike.
This year's MGX-21 Flying Fortress looks like a more credible business proposal, and Guzzi even had a display case filled with various optional parts and accessories.
In a way, I translated this in the fact that Moto Guzzi has more serious plans with the MGX-21. Even though trying to identify the ideal customer for this beast is a rather hard task (at least for me), I can vouch there are a lot of guys out there who think an all-black carbon-clad California 1400 bagger is incredibly sexy.
Cue carbon fiber classic bagger side hard cases, an ample carbon tank cover, generous front fenders and various other accents, plus the satin black finish on the engine, swingarm, silencers, collectors and all.
Red has a minimalist presence aboard the MGX-21 Flying Fortress and is only used for the valve covers front calipers (Brembo radial, of course) and the badges on the side covers.
Prices and availability are still to be announced, but I'd definitely like to see the Moto Guzzi MGX-21 Flying Fortress as a real 2016 option.

Any color is good as long as it's black
The MGX-21 Flying Fortress retains the darkened livery and makes liberal use of carbon fiber.
