Last year, this editor called the new Golf R the performance bargain of the 2013. And for good reason, as European performance hatch is said to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds if fitted with an automatic gearbox.
Now that Volkswagen is getting ready to launch the most powerful production Golf ever made, a surprise entry has been announced for the Detroit Auto Show.
The US-spec Golf R will go on sale in the first quarter of 2015, about a year from now. It's said to deliver "estimated 290 horsepower, but is more fuel efficient than previous Golf R". Basically, it's an import from Europe.
The official press (see below) release about the US-bound hot Golf does answer one big question we had about the car. It appears that the expensive dynamic chassis control (DCC) has been taken off the standard kit list because it would have been too expensive.
