Mechanics. People equipped with tools and (allegedly) all the required knowledge to help you get to the bottom of what is wrong with your car. But, again, as we all know, that's almost never the case. And below is the proof.
A study conducted by British magazine Which? found that in the UK some 87 percent of mechanics are oblivious to what is happening to the car they are supposed to repair. The study conducted by Which? Has not been done over the phone, but with a bit more “hands-on” approach.
The guys from the magazine caused some problems with their vehicles and than went to several servicing stations across the country. According to the reporters, the problems they themselves caused required at most five minutes to check and three minutes to fix: a flat spare tire, low braking fluid and a malfunctioning reverse light.
Mechanics, in their vast majority, failed to fix the flat spare tire (68 percent). The bad light was left as it was in 57 percent of the cases, while 48 percent of the mechanics failed to spot the low brake fluid. But that doesn't mean they won't charge you a bit... extra.
According to Which?, 40 percent of the service stations visited billed the owner for windshield washer fluid, despite the fact that the tank holding the stuff was full when the car came into the station.
