The 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty is far from what I’d call a cheap truck. With prices starting from $32,535 for the F-250 XL, it’s a given that the heavy-duty truck industry is changing.
According to Ford, it’s the customers who want more luxurious, smarter pickup trucksTake the F-450 Platinum as a case in point. Why would Ford try to sell a $77,125 if there weren’t a market for this sort of heavy-duty extravaganza? As hardly believable as it sounds, the most popular F-Series Super Duty workhorses out there are the Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum.

More to the point, the top-dollar trim levels account for 71 percent of retail sales in the United States. The Blue Oval underlines that demand is especially strong for the Crew Cab body style, four-wheel-drive, and the Power Stroke diesel-fed V8, the torquiest and most expensive engine available.

In pickup-crazy Dallas and Houston, this configuration outpaces the rest of the U.S. by 97 percent. I’m not exactly surprised by these numbers, though. “The technology features in the new F-Series trucks, in particular the all-new 2017 Super Duty, are generating even greater interest,” said Chaz Gilmore, the managing partner of a Dallas-based Ford and Lincoln dealership.

This truck is bringing a lot of new buyers out of competitive brands and into the Ford family. Ford really knocked it out of the park with this truck’s performance, options and technology offerings," he added. Another reason why Ford can’t make the 2017 Super Duty quickly enough to meet demand is because this year marks the first major redesign of the nameplate since 1999.

Beyond the sheer capability built into the heavy-duty workhorse, the F-Series Super Duty also happens to boast countless class-executive technologies. Five of the most important are adaptive steering, adaptive cruise control with collision mitigation, Trailer Reverse Guidance via the SYNC infotainment system, BLIS with cross-traffic alert and trailer tow, and lane-keeping assist.

On that note, it seems that technology innovation proves to be a primordial differentiator between a truck and a truck people would like to own.
