Mosley Warns: No Biofuel in Formula 1

Max Mosley insisted that environmentalists should not get their hopes up when talking about the possibility of Formula 1 switching to biofuels in the near future. The FIA president argued that such a move would be detrimental in terms of global economy as it would take away “fuel from the people” (meaning food).

Mosley said the main disadvantage of Formula 1 using first generation biofuel would be its sourcing.

“We now all understand the first generation biofuels are actually a negative in that what you're effectively doing is taking fuel away from people. The source of the first generation biofuels is the same as food and, when you've got one billion people in the world who don't have enough to eat, it's really not a good thing to do,” said Mosley.

The 78-year old Englishman revealed that F1 will be turning the page to a more environmentally friendly approach for the future, only it won't be directed to the fuel but to more efficient energy sources. The perfect example is the newly-developed Kinetic Energy Recovery System, which uses energy from braking to provide a significant power boost.

Mosley made it very clear that he intends to push for the introduction of similar technologies that will make use of exhaust or even cooling system to provide more power to the engine.

“The KERS system is an obvious thing that needs doing because anybody can see that to waste the energy you have in a car when it is moving by simply turning it into heat and putting it into the atmosphere is completely wasteful. If the technology exists to recover the energy again and use it again then obviously we should use that.”

“Other examples are the recovery of energy from exhausts and even from the cooling system, both of which will come into Formula 1 in 2013,” added the FIA president.
