This new alternative-fuel vehicle from Hyundai is based on a new platform and the Koreans say it's the first car ever to incorporate three powertrains in a single body type. They're very wrong, in this regard, with models like the Toyota Auris, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and plenty others offering at least three powertrain options in a single car model for years.
The Ioniq will be available with electric, plug-in gasoline/electric or gasoline/electric hybrid powertrains. So, if you can’t decide what configuration you want for your next green car, this will be the perfect choice for you.
The exterior is crafted to match its environmental credentials and to reduce aerodynamic drag for greater efficiency.
Hyundai officials claim that the car will combine both a fun and responsive driving experience and will also meet the needs of customers who care about how their car influences the environment.
Specifically made lines minimize wind resistance and assist an efficient air flow around the car. Hyundai wanted to keep the drag coefficient as low as possible, so they have installed at the front of the car “active” flaps that direct the airflow over the vehicle. A newly designed grille is bordered by new headlamps featuring “C”-position lights.
Inside, the Ioniq welcomes its guests with an interior space designed specially to make them feel as comfortable as possible. The smooth and elegant theme continues with an efficient use of the interior space and stylish surfaces made from eco-friendly materials.
It seems that, in the last few years, Hyundai has become a major contender in the EV market. In 2012, the Korean carmaker released the first details on a concept that featured a smaller gasoline engine and an electric motor. Furthermore, in 2013, the company became the first car manufacturer to mass-produce a hydrogen-fueled car, the Tucson Fuel Cell.
The Ioniq is set to be launched in January 2016 in Korea, followed by the Geneva International Motor Show and the New York Auto Show, both in March of next year.
