More Takata Airbag-Fitted Toyotas Recalled in Japan

Takata, one of the top three auto safety equipment manufacturers, discovered last year it did a little boo-boo with the explosive chemicals used to detonate the airbags on vehicles fitted with their technology. The result turned out to be the world’s biggest recall involving airbags, counting around 7 million cars from automakers like Toyota, Honda, Nissan and BMW.

The problem was that Takata had used the wrong ingredients for the explosive device that inflates the airbag. The result made the inflators prone to bursting in the passengers’ faces and even cause excessive flames.

In an attempt to remediate the situation, Takata provided the defective airbags serial numbers to all automakers using its technology. However, Toyota now said the serial numbers were incomplete, thus needing to make another recall now.

According to an official statement, around 650,000 Toyotas sold in Japan will have to visit the service again to receive a new inflator. Toyota said it will also change its repair procedure for vehicles sold in the United States that have been already recalled for this airbag issue.

It looks like 2014 is the year of recalls; Toyota hat at least three airbag safety recalls so far due to faulty spiral cables, sensors and software glitches. The other automotive giant, General Motors, is also facing troubles due to defective ignition switches, which caused the death of at least 13 people so far.
