French carmaker Peugeot is in a bit of a sticky situation. Overcapacity, bad sales for some models and of course lack of demand due to the bad European economy. We think this car has a good chance of fixing all those problems.
It's the new French compact hatch which will target the premium segment, rivaling the VW Golf and Ford Focus with cool new features. The second generation Peugeot 308 is codenamed T9 and revolves around brand new underpinnings designed to make the lion's car much lighter.
The thing is, the French carmaker already has a sedan in the compact class, the 301. So why compete for the same folks with two different cars? Think of it this way, VW Group puts quite some diastase between its cheaper Skoda models and the Volkswagen Golf. Think of it as the Skoda Rapid versus the Golf 7.
In much the same way, the Peugeot 308 has a lot more premium features. These real life photos of the car that we found on a French forum show a number of interesting features in finer detail. For instance, the 308 is available with a fully panoramic roof or leather seats. We've examined the photos closely and came to the conclusion that the base version of the 308 is a lot different in terms of fit and finish. For instance, it has a parking lever instead of a button, there are fewer soft-touch materials and the all-LED headlights aren't available, being replaced with a simpler layout.
Where the 308 seems to fall behind is in the safety systems department. There doesn't seem to be a camera based sensor like on the Golf or Skoda Octavia. It does have a reversing camera though.
