Next Volkswagen GTI to Get More Power - GTD May Be Coming to US

The best of the current crop front-wheel drive only hot hatches have already surpassed the 250 hp mark, while cars like the sixth generation VW Golf GTI, and the Civic Type R, are still stuck around the 200-ish hp mark. However, according to blog.caranddriver.com, the upcoming GTI will pack considerably more punch.

The GTI has all-but-faded from the lime light of the hot hatch world, being more of a warm hatch, in its standard form. To match (an surpass) the best current hot hatches, and keep the VW badge, one has to pay considerably more for the all-wheel drive Golf R - but you’re better off with an EVO or WRX in that respect.

Rumor has it that the seventh generation GTI will feature the 267 hp engine currently powering the Golf R and Scirocco R. Also, the GTD may also get a power boost, from the current 170 hp, as well as a possible introduction to the US market, where a ‘halo model’ for VW diesel fans (and there are plenty in the US) to aspire to own.

This means that the Golf R will get even more power, or disappear completely - the latter seems the more natural course of action, considering how the modern automotive world works. We are very interested in this matter and we will let you know as soon as we know more.
