More Powerful Subaru BRZ Confirmed: Not a Turbo

Last year, Subaru showed a really cool car at the LA Auto Show. It was called the BRZ STI Concept and it had the big wing, wheel arches and quad exhaust that any real Subaru drive who fears diesel and will bore you all day about rallying.

The BRZ sports coupe and its Toyota brother are taking plenty of flak right now about the relatively slow sprint time. But Subaru will soon provide an STI version for those wanting more power.

According to a report from AutoExpress, Subaru’s head of global marketing Atoshi Atake was inundated with requests for the more powerful version.

“Let me say this – we will certainly satisfy our customers,” said Atanke frankly. “We are already working on a faster version.”

But the faster model might not be an STI version at all. If we remember correctly, when Motor Trend tested the BRZ last year, they found there was absolutely no room for a turbo under he hood. Indeed, Mr. Atake admits the more powerful BRZ will have a tweaked exhaust and intake, but definitely no turbo: “we want to keep turbocharging separate. It is for models like the WRX STI.”
