No fewer than 17 years after the A80 stopped being made, Toyota revived the Supra as the GR Supra for the 2020 model year. Even though it shares much of its underpinnings with the BMW Z4, the Japanese automaker didn’t offer the six-cylinder engine with the maximum output ratings possible.
After selling out the Launch Edition above MSRP because dealerships can’t help but mark up the suggested retail price, Toyota has finally given the Supra the engine it deserves. A match for the Z4 M40i, the 2021 model year in the United States comes with 382 horsepower and 365 pound-feet.
The thing is, the suck-squeeze-bang-blow gains are leveled out by the miles per gallon. On the Environmental Protection Agency’s website, the 2021 with the high-output engine is listed at 25 mpg on the combined driving cycle while the 2020 with the lesser six-cylinder engine averages up to 26.
Now here’s the curious part. The BMW Z4 in sDrive30i flavor is rated at 27 miles per gallon while the M40i tops 26. Although lighter than the Z4 for the 2020 model year, the Supra fares worse in this department because Toyota has performed a number of upgrades for 2021, starting with the chassis.
In addition to lightweight aluminum traces that connect the strut towers to the radiator support, the 2021 also boasts adaptive dampers. Revisions to the suspension, differential, and stability control were also made. As for zero-to-60 mph, the more powerful engine option can hit that speed in 3.9 clicks.
The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t list the other newity that Toyota introduced to the U.S. specification for the 2021 model year, namely the ratings for the 2.0-liter base engine that's been previously exclusive to the Japanese domestic market. Good for 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, the four-cylinder turbo is much obliged to hit 60 in five seconds flat.
Obviously enough, the Supra 2.0 is the lightest of the lot at 3,181 pounds.
