Four hours. That’s all it took for Mazda to sell the entire batch of 500 MX-5 30th Anniversary edition meant for the U.S. market back in February. Of course, that left a lot of people unhappy about not being able to get one.
When it announced the car at the beginning of the year, the Japanese carmaker said the production run is limited to just 3,000 units worldwide (40 markets in all). Of them, only 500 were initially meant for the U.S.

With a starting price of $34,995 for the soft top and $37,595 for the RF, the allotted cars were sold almost instantly, with 100 cars being reserved within the first 15 minutes and the rest spoken for by the end of the fourth hour.

A number of people that managed to register but were unable to complete the purchase because there was nothing left to buy were put on a waiting list, in the hope that markets elsewhere prove less MX-5 hungry and there’ll be some leftovers.

Luckily for exactly 143 people on the waiting list, that’s exactly what happened and on Monday (May 13) Mazda announced it has increased the U.S. allocation to 643. It did not say however how many (if any) others are left on the waiting list.

“We’ve said it for years, without our diehard fans, the Miata would not be a cultural phenomenon and best-selling roadster of all time,” said in a statement Masahiro Moro, Mazda North America CEO.

“Fan response to the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary has been incredible and we’re proud to bring additional units to those on the waitlist.”

The MX-5 30th Anniversary was revealed at the beginning of the year at the Chicago Auto Show with a very special look thanks to the Racing Orange paint scheme. Dark Gunmetal forged alloy wheels, orange Brembo front brake calipers and a few other special elements make the car unique.
