More Info on the BMW 6 Series GT

Although no official confirmation or details of BMW's 6 Series-based GT came from the German manufacturer yet, it would appear the car is coming in the near future. Even more, thanks to the sources and resources of our colleagues from bmwblog.com, the GT 6 got its first detailed description.

According to the source, the GT 6 will represent what the company calls a "natural progression" of a premium sports coupe. Excepting the Z concepts or the X range, the GT 6 will be the first BMW model to have a full hatchback and unique passenger entry. As we reported earlier this week, the GT 6 will feature a Mazda RX-8 like rear hatch and no B-pillar.

BMW might target the new Porsche Panamera as a competitor and the company is working on designing the car to separate the GT 6 from its rivals. The car will have a very low driving position, while on the inside BMW is working on strengthening the pillars and adding reinforcements to the chassis.

Even so, the GT 6 will not be the heaviest car of its segment. The extensive use of aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber will make sure of that. The pillars and the roof of the vehicle will be filled with a foam that when hardens helps provide stability.

Several engine options will be available for the GT 6, starting from a petrol V8 twin-turbo engine, and ending at a hybrid unit. Diesel powered engines are not left on the side, as the new GT will also feature a diesel, six cylinder powerplant.

Although the GT 6 will enter a market that already has the 6 Series coupe, the two vehicles will not compete for the same piece of pie. The GT 6 is aimed at bringing a new approach compared to the coupe, a new style and different driving dynamics.
