Monza Previews Future of Opel Design at Essen 2013

Among the numerous tuning and racing projects present in Essen this year, there were a few concept cars from major automakers. This is perhaps one of the most relevant, the Monza coupe concept, which is not headed into production, yet previews the next generation design language for the automaker.

The Monza concept will likely influence the next generation Astra compact design in two major areas. Firstly, there's the front end, where a lower and larger grille is flanked by tapered LED headlights. The industry is moving toward offering standard LEDs in the compact segment. SEAT has it on most Leon models, Peugeot on the new 308 and in 2015 it could become standard on the Astra as well.

Another interesting feature is represented by the high-tech dashboard that uses 18 LED projectors to create a continuous, adaptable multifunctional display.

The powertrain also speaks volumes about what Opel thinks could power the next Astra. It's an electric drive car with a CNG range extender, a 1-liter three-cylinder based on the new SIDI Turbo technology.
