Montoya Tips Hamilton as Next F1 Champ

After previously tipping Robert Kubica with winning the F1 title – or at least wanting the Pole to succeed in doing that this season – former McLaren driver and Formula One 'bad boy' admitted that he would put all his money on Hamilton before the season finale in Brazil. On one condition, though: the Brit would have to race for points and not for victory at Interlagos.

“I think Felipe will probably win the race. And if I was Lewis, I wouldn't be anywhere close to him. If Felipe comes anywhere near him, I would let him by. Lewis has got to play this pretty smart. When you're that young and you're in Formula One, you want to win every race. That's great, but when you're points racing all of a sudden, you've got to learn that a different result can be the best one for you,” autosport.com quoted Montoya as saying earlier today.

The Colombian also insisted that what happened last year – when Hamilton missed out on the title despite leading Kimi Raikkonen on a 7-point advantage before the Brazilian Grand Prix – will not affect neither the Brit nor his team.

“They know all about what happened last year, but I don't think they'll dwell on it. McLaren have won world championships before, so I think they'll do a pretty good job in Brazil. I think Lewis will win it, I'll be surprise if he doesn't. He's done a good job with his career and I think he's a great guy. F1 is all about the car, so if you've got that, it's all good for you,” concluded Montoya.

Finally an advice worth taking under consideration, when you think Eddie Jordan insisted Hamilton should get Massa off the track in Brazil should this maneuver bring him the world title earlier this week.

Hamilton holds a 7-point advantage over his closest (and only) rival for the world title Felipe Massa with only the Brazilian Grand Prix separating him from his first F1 crown. Should he finish 5th or better in the race, Hamilton will become the first McLaren driver to win the world title after Mika Hakkinen in 1999.
