Montoya Gets Target Sponsorship for 2009

Juan Pablo Montoya will reunite with former sponsor Target ahead of the 2009 Sprint Cup Series, announced Earnhardt Ganassi Racing yesterday. The Colombian was last sponsored by Target back in 2000, when he used to race in the Champ Car World Series. However, due to their lack of sponsorship for the No 42 Dodge ahead of 2009, the team decided to move Target from sponsoring their No 41 Dodge to primary sponsor of Montoya.

“I am looking forward to reuniting Target and Montoya. They had quite a bit of success in their last stint together and to add Juan to a Team Target that already has (Scott) Dixon and (Dario) Franchitti in the IndyCar Series is going to be great for them,” said co-owner of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, Chip Ganassi.

“Target is a premium full-season sponsor and Montoya is a premium driver and putting them together is the right thing to do for everyone. There is little in my racing career I am more proud of than my team's partnership with Target. We will be entering our 20th season with Target in 2009 and we could not be happier with adding Montoya to the Target mix,” added Ganassi.

Montoya was also pleased to hear about his new sponsorship deal, as the Colombian driver finally secured funding for another full-time schedule in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series. He therefore joins Martin Truex as only drivers in the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing lineup to have secured sponsorship for the upcoming season – as Aric Almirola is yet to announce a full-time sponsor.

“Target was my first sponsor here in the US and I'm really looking forward to driving a Target car again. They are a great organization that I had a lot of great experiences with back in my CART days. With the progress we were making toward the end of 2008 the 42 team is poised for a great season and I am really looking forward to Daytona,” said Montoya.

Montoya's first outing under Target sponsorship will take place as early as the upcoming weekend, as the Colombian will partner Grand-Am champions Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas in the famous Rolex 24 sportscar race at Daytona.
